Entertaiment is a broad category of activities that are used to amuse, enlighten, or educate people. It includes films, television shows, books, music, sports and games, visual arts, and other forms of recreation.
From the Medieval Latin intertenere, from the Latin prefix inter- and the suffix tenere (to hold inside). It is closely related to the verb entertain.
The entertainment industry is currently in a slump. Movie and TV productions have been losing money, and business has slowed for record and music labels. People are buying less merchandise and downloading music from the Internet, and they’re bargain-hunting on eBay and Craigslist. Entertainment often hits on topics that the brain was shaped to react to deeply, such as backstabbing, murders and other social themes. These themes stimulate the release of seratonin and other chemicals, which give a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction.
