Entertaiment is an event which takes the spectator to another world in a euphoric state, makes him forget all his problems and wish that it would last forever. Entertainment can be adapted to any scale, from an individual who chooses his private entertainment from the now enormous array of pre-recorded products; through a banquet adapted for two; to parties for thousands or even a worldwide audience. The experience of being entertained has become strongly associated with amusement, so that one not uncommon understanding of the idea is fun and laughter, although many entertainments have a serious purpose, as in various styles of ceremony, celebration, religious festival or satire for example. The word derives from the medieval Latin intertenere, a compound of the prefix inter meaning inside and the Latin root tenere, meaning to hold or stretch.
