The Daily News is a New York-based tabloid newspaper that has a long and storied history. Founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News, it was one of the first successful American tabloids. The paper also served as a model for the tabloid in the 1994 film “The Paper”. It’s been awarded 11 Pulitzer Prizes, and in 2017, it won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. It is currently owned by Tribune Publishing, a media company with a reputation for bold presentation and a strong focus on digital content.
As the Daily News grew, so did its circulation. By 1947, it had reached 2.4 million copies per day. That’s up from 1.5 million in 1930. It was a top seller, even as the Post and its successors sucked up much of the local news business. The paper’s cartoons, lurid photographs and sensational crime coverage attracted readers. It was also a pioneer in using the Associated Press wirephoto service, and it became a popular target for political wrongdoing.
During the early 1940s, the paper leaned toward a conservative stance, as it espoused isolationism and support for the military. It was a staunchly Republican newspaper throughout the remainder of its existence.
As the Daily News continued to grow, its staff expanded to include a large number of photographers. It was a popular venue for reporting on social intrigue, crime and sports. The paper was a popular news source for celebrity gossip, and it often won awards for its writing and photography. It also branched out into radio and television. By the 1970s, it had a television network, WPIX, and a radio station, WFAN. In 1991, it became part of the MediaNews Group. The WPIX television station was sold to Emmis Communications, which is now owned by CBS Radio. The company’s other properties are The Orlando Sentinel and the Morning Call.
In the mid-1970s, the Daily News began shifting, with the paper’s headquarters moving to Jersey City, NJ and the paper itself shifting to an interactive edition that allowed readers to interact with the paper’s news content through computer or mobile devices. The site was designed to be a portal for the newspaper’s many readers. As of September 2016, the newspaper had a circulation of more than 200,000.
Although the newspaper has gone through many changes, its core mission remains. It is still a popular source of local news for New York City residents. The paper has won numerous Pulitzer Prizes, including for its commentary, its reporting and its design. In addition to its flagship daily print publication, The Daily News also publishes magazines, newspapers and other types of articles.
In 2017, The Daily News was purchased by Tribune Publishing for $1. That same year, it was named the best newspaper in the country, and it received the Pulitzer Prize for public service. Its current owner, Alden Global Capital, owns nearly a third of the publicly traded Tribune Publishing shares. While the publisher has since imposed furloughs and pay cuts, The Daily News is still a popular newspaper.
