The Basics of Automobiles

THE SYSTEMS

The major systems in an automobile are the engine, fuel system, transmission, electrical system, cooling and lubrication system, and chassis. These systems interact with each other and support the entire vehicle to make it work effectively.

ENGINES

The most important engine in an automobile is the gas or diesel motor that uses a chemically volatile fuel to generate energy. This process produces heat and pressure, which in turn forces the pistons to move upward and outward through valves that open and close at different rates. The resulting high pressures must be contained within the cylinder to prevent combustion from rupturing, which can damage internal parts. In addition, the exhaust produced by the combustion of the fuel must be removed from the cylinder and carried away to prevent harmful pollutants from forming in the air.

TRANSMITTERS

The transmission is the system that converts the engine’s rotational energy into the wheels’ linear movement. The transmission has several forward gears, each with a different ratio of the crankshaft (power input) to the wheels’ rotary motion (output). Each gear provides a different amount of torque that is directed to the rear axle through the tires.

HANDLING AND SUSPENSION

The automobile must have the ability to maneuver in a tight space, but it should be durable enough to handle rough terrain and stop quickly when needed. The automobile must have adequate suspension for both the front and rear wheels.
