Entertaiment is the ability to occupy, amuse, or delight. It may be an activity that is passive, such as watching a movie or opera, or active, such as playing games or sports. Entertainments may be a banquet adapted for two, or for thousands; or they may be small and private, such as conversation or reading; or they can have a serious purpose, such as a religious festival or ceremony, or be an act of satire. The word derives from the Medieval Latin inter tenere, meaning “to hold within.” See also amusement.
